Network management as defined in the ISO network management model and standards, such as SNMP, focused on management of five factors: the performance of the network, the configuration of the hardware and software deployed, the utilisation of network resources, fault detection and resolution and finally security.  It is clear that these five factors are still relevant in a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) deployment.

However, the dynamic and complex set of inter-application connections inherent in any SOA deployment requires a very different approach to management compared with that required for earlier IT architectures built around unchanging applications with a few static connection points.  Furthermore because of this dynamism and complexity, it can be argued that management is actually one of the most important dimensions of SOA.  Used correctly, SOA management can reduce the cost and risk associated with the deployment of new business relationships, enhance the efficient use of existing IT investments and can measure the real value to the organization of SOA itself.

This insight explores the scope and components of a SOA management strategy.  Defining such a strategy provides an essential input into SOA governance planning as well as more generally an organisation's enterprise management strategy.
